How to Convert a CMF File to MP3

CMF files are rarely seen today but were once popular for use in computer games. Creative Labs designed the format to highlight the features of its first Sound Blaster sound cards. Winamp Media Player and iTunes can convert your old CMF files to the MP3 format for playing on any MP3 player.

   Things You'll Need

Instructions

   *  Converting CMF Files to WAV

   *     Launch Winamp. Drag a CMF file into the Winamp playlist window and play the file to confirm that the AdPlug plug-in is working properly. The file should sound much as it would coming from an original Sound Blaster card.

    *    Click "Options," then click "Preferences." On the left side of the window, click "Output." On the right side of the window, click "Nullsoft Disk Writer." Click the "Configure" button. Click the button next to "Directory" to choose the folder that your converted files will be saved to. Click "OK," then click "Close."

   *     Add all of your CMF files to the Winamp playlist, then double-click on the first one. All of the files will be converted to the WAV format and saved to the folder that you selected.

 *       Launch iTunes. Drag your newly-created WAV files to the iTunes library to add them to iTunes.

Click "Edit," then click "Preferences." Click the "Advanced" tab, then click the "Importing" tab under it. Next to "Import Using," select "MP3 Encoder." Next to "Setting," select "192 kbps." Any lower setting can produce unacceptable audio quality when converting CMF files. Click "OK."

Highlight all of the files that you added to iTunes. Right-click on any of them, and select "Convert Selection to MP3." You can delete the original WAV files after the conversion is complete, if you wish.
